We all recall seeing (or even being involved with) that incident in school: An awkward kid walks by a group of fellow students and they laugh at his clothes, hair, even how he walks the halls.


Yet what this reveals is more than just a sad display of ridicule and persecution of others, but also the insecurity and uncertainty of those who are ridiculing.


Kevin Warren would know this, as he spent many of his schooling years in the popular crowd, mocking those that didn’t fit in with them. Inside though, Kevin realized he wanted to have the same self-confidence those awkward kids had, and proudly showed to others.


His new semi-autobiography, An Open Letter, chronicles the inner battle of identity he waged against himself, but finally triumphed when he became an adult. His path towards self-acceptance, and acceptance of others, is one that he hopes his book will lead others to embark on as well.


It was the moment I realized that I no longer had any sign of the “Real Kevin” in my life; every relationship I thought I had was built on one of the many versions of myself…. In that moment I made a choice to find myself even though to everyone else it may have seemed like I was so confident in who I was. I had to be HONEST with myself that although I appeared to be put together, I no longer wanted to buy my own lie.


He was just a kid who wanted to be accepted as the “real Kevin”; the same is possible for each of us and our dreams.
