Born in North Alabama, Roy Isbell was born to a poor sharecropper family. At the end of his sophomore year in school, he got a summer job with Kinney Shoe Company. At the beginning of his junior year, he was then offered a job as an assistant manager of a new store they were opening in St. Petersburg FL. After being robbed twice at gunpoint, he left the company and returned to North AL, where he worked for Sears for the next two years.
After being out of school for 2 years, he went back to high school in the mornings, and worked in the afternoons. He enrolled in college at the University of North AL and majored in music (Voice) and minored in English and Creative Writing.
For the last 35 years, he has managed his own Marketing consulting firm and has spent 59 years as a church minister of music, and has done concerts over the south east and in two foreign countries. He retired at the end of 2013 from both his company and the church where he was music director to devote his time to writing.
