Speaking to Friends in Philadelphia in 1961, A.J. Muste observed, “I spend a good deal of time these days among those who are regarded as unbelievers, and my thoughts constantly shuttle back and forth between the conviction that many of these are the true believers and the wish that I might be able to give them an account of the faith that is in me – and which in some sense they do not have – in language that would be comprehensible to them.”
The man who made this remark had in fact always spent a good deal of his time among those regarded as unbelievers and frequently found among secular revolutionaries and activists a spirit of fellowship and a sensitivity to moral issues which were absent among professing Christians. Yet Muste was profoundly and inescapably a man of religion – not a man of the church or of any religious institution – but a man who knew in his innermost being the redeeming and enabling power of Divine Love.
