Luck of Scotland

The joy of peace: smiling homesteads and prosperous farms, cattle lowing in the byres and resting on the hills, children playing merrily over the heather, ploughboys whistling as they turned the rich loam--these were scenes which Constance Clume and James Moray had never seen in their short lives. War had held Scotland in its cruel grip when they were born and war was holding Scotland still. The time was Scotland's darkest: her King was a homeless wanderer and her people were scattered and oppressed. Her great towns were in the possession of England, and an army was massing on the Border to crush her utterly beneath the iron heel of the invader. To add to the sorrow and confusion was the warring strife between the clans--Scotland's heritage of hate.
Yet in the hearts of boy and girl alike was something greater than all the pain and sorrow: the love of Scotland and the love of Scotland's King. It was this which gave them strength in peril and courage in danger, which brought them the high resolve never to give up, even though the Luck of Scotland was held by an alien King.
