This is another volume in our continuing effort to document the early history of baseball in Washington DC. This edition covers the period when baseball level of baseball played falls to one of the lowest points in the District’s long history.
The season starts with a core group of veterans seeking redemption and a host of youngsters keen on making a name for themselves. The weekly Tuesday meeting of the directors, under the control of Michael Scanlon, only serves to add to the misery of the team as losses mount while managers and players come and go with a shocking regularity. It is a dreadful, awful miserable season of baseball in Washington. But truth be told the team, despite finishing in last place and losing nearly 100 games actually makes money. Whatever Scanlon’s faults, and he had many, the man knew how to make a buck. Here is the story of an odd but interesting season and Scanlon’s last one in Washington.
“Baseball in the District,” is the title we have assigned to our project to document the early history of baseball in Washington DC. This book documents the 1891 season. This book like others in the series is written in chronological narrative, every game is covered. Local papers and sporting publications are used. This is how the players were viewed in their own time. Information about players the reader may not be aware of is referenced. Historical events are presented as they happened.
Our series about baseball in Washington, “Baseball in the District,” includes the following titles. Most are available as e-books at Barnes & Noble. Hard copy available upon request. Karen and I have been avid baseball fans and enjoy traveling the country taking in ball games at all levels. Comments suggestions, email us at
