This novel was published in 1890. The author narrates the story about difficult life of peasants. In the book, the author described Norwegian religious life. It is the one story by which he was most widely known outside his native country. In this story Bjørnson has been influenced by the Ibsen's social dramas. But the author brought a higher inspiration and a stronger faith in humanity than the famous dramatist possessed.
