The Tragedy of Hamlet, prince of Denmark is tragedy written by English poet, playwright and actor William Shakespeare, who is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world preeminent dramatist.

Creating Hamlet Shakespeare was inspired by the legend of Amleth, retold by 16th century by scholar Francois de Belleforest. Shakespeare may also have drawn on an earlier Elizabethan play, known today as Ur-Hamlet.
