One day a stranger came to Admetus who was a king in Thessaly. He asked the king to serve in his palace. No one knew his name, but he looked very comely and the king made him chief of the royal flocks. Every day he strolled with his sheep on the bank of the river and he knew how to cure the ills of any wayfarer with any weed that grew near the king's palace.
