Bob's first Pendle Hill pamphlet, Psychotherapy Based on Human Longing, was published in 1960. Because thirty-five years ago longing had not been widely recognized as a basic human drive, the pamphlet met an unarticulated need in psychotherapists and psychiatrists countrywide.
Since that time psychotherapy, largely in the hands of non-medical practitioners, has become strongly based on human longing, while more orthodox psychiatry, with its explosion of new research findings in neurobiology, has drifted away from its earlier reliance on the creative Unconscious. Much of psychotherapy has become focused on mind and spirit, psychiatry on brain and pharmacology.
This paper attempts to make the genius of the Unconscious fascinating to readers.
