Over the Alps on a Bicycle [illustrated]

Elizabeth Robins Pennell (1855-1936), and her husband Joseph Pennell, began bicycling in the 1870's, first on a tandem tricycle and later on individual bicycles. They traveled by bicycle extensively, with Elizabeth writing travelogues and Joseph illustrating them. Elizabeth claimed that "there is no more healthful or more stimulating form of exercise; there is no physical pleasure greater than that of being borne along, at a good pace, over a hard, smooth road by your own exertions". The history of the bicycle and the history of women's rights were intertwined, with many women realizing the freedom that a bicycle could provide.

"Over the Alps on a Bicycle", the Pennells' final cycle-travelogue, was published in 1898 and documented their journey through some of the highest alpine passes in Europe. Joseph's illustrations (over 30) are included in this edition, and were painstakingly formatted for the kindle. Also included is an all-new foreword by Dr. Sheila Hanlon, an historian specializing in women's cycling history.
