Jack Powelson is Professor of Economics at the University of Colorado where he specializes in economic development. During leaves from the University, he has served as economic advisor in Bolivia, Mexico, and Kenya and has lectured in universities and government agencies in nineteen Latin American countries, twelve African countries, and one Asian country.
He is a pacifist who has protested against racial injustice and armament. But increasingly, protestors do more than protest: they propose positive solutions to social ills. While it is good to think in these directions, Jack Powelson is concerned that protestors may not have taken into account the complexity of economics: how seemingly “obvious” solutions have indirect consequences that may either reverse what was planned or victimize people to whom no harm was intended. This pamphlet explains these situations in language for lay people.
