Mrs. Karen and Dr. Edward Ponella are the richest and most powerful couple in St. Bernard, Florida. They “had it all” according to friend and foe alike. But outward appearances are deceiving; their world was perfect, except behind closed doors. Karen, a principal at one of the top schools in the county, was busy sleeping with whomever she felt could further her career. The teachers at the school could not stand her, because she smiled while in their classrooms, and smiled even more while playing in some of their beds. Meanwhile, Dr. Ponella was desperately clinging to life while struggling to maintain his position of prominence in the community. To both of them, their “perfect world” also included eliminating anyone with a trace of ethnicity within their system.
Bob Johnson was a teacher at Franklin Elementary school and his love life was the spice in somebody's life, but definitely not his wife's. He thought that sleeping with anyone and everyone could solve all problems, until one Saturday morning when the phone rang. When he hung up, he didn’t know what to think. Had the people he thought he could trust betrayed him? Would his entire world now come tumbling down?
Tyrone White is the new deputy in the community. He is faced with so many challenges that his family is concerned for his safety. Tyrone is African-American, and one of only 10 percent of the town’s population. All of Deputy White's co-workers are plotting to move him out of the way, by any means necessary. His supervisor was also in agreement.
St. Bernard, Florida, is filled with lies, cheating, hatred and crimes that seem to appear commonplace for the community at large. Yet they welcome one and all with open arms—if you meet the criteria of the other 90 percent of the population.
What did Bob Johnson hear during his phone call? What plans does Karen Ponella have for those who are new to the community? Will Tyrone end up “at the bottom of a river”? The pages of this book reveal the answers to these, and many other closed-door meetings.
