The Monastery

The Monastery by Walter Scott is the historical novel published in 1820. The Monastery is the part of serious "Tales from Benedictine Sources". These novels involve multiple actors and a common theme describing the development and triumph Protestantism in Scotland. The actions of the story take place in south east Scotland, on the River Tweed in the Monastery of Kennaquhair. At this time the Scottish Reformation is just beginning and the monastery is in deadly peril. Two boys fall in love with Mary Avenel and during the whole story each of them is trying to make best efforts to achieve her.
