Chapter One
A bad day. Just a bad damn day!
A lost promotion had left Shalonda Davies mad as hell. But she tried to focus on the elevator door. If she could just make it out of the office without blowing her cool and cursing her boss out, she would be okay.
Shoving the large, dark, Jackie-O sunglasses up on her face, she took a deep breath and started the long trek from her desk toward the EXIT sign.
While strolling the too-bright hallway with all the dignity and pride she could muster, the thought of getting home to a hot bath, glass of wine, and a pan of warm brownies calmed her just enough to make it through the whispering crowd of co-workers without breaking down.
_______________
Shalonda didn't know it, but the man who had just landed her coveted job promotion had been watching her all along. Diego Juarez saw her moments before at her desk fighting to hold back a mountain of tears on the brink of cascading down her lovely brown cheeks.
Nothing got past him when it came to Shalonda Davies. The look on her delicate face pained him, because the last thing in the world he wanted to do was hurt her. Through her noticeably brainy and often tough exterior, he could see her softness.
But the job promotion couldn't be helped. It had been part of the ruse designed to snuff out the illegal practices of Stockton Financial. The District Attorney's Office had been after the accounting firm for a long time. For years, the organization had been helping South American drug lords launder dirty money. But finally, the mission was almost complete with Detective Diego Juarez firmly planted on the inside under the guise of company employee.
As Diego stared at the woman's bountiful, voluptuous frame wiggling its way past the clump of nosy onlookers, he devised a plan of his own.
A visit to Shalonda's home later that evening could provide the missing piece of the puzzle needed to shut the doors of Atlanta's largest accounting firm once and for all ... and the visit could potentially get the woman he'd had his eyes on for months into his arms.
