This charming little piece of work follows the almost-true life maritime adventure of a simple girl, Fizz, who grew up on country roads, steeped in Southern culture, including the yearly Fiddler's Convention in a very small city in Southwestern Virginia. The nearest water was over a hundred miles away and that lake was not in Fizz's family list of "hot-spots." She couldn't swim, was somewhat terrified of water, and the absolute last thought in her fairly-organized head was boating.
Then Gerg appeared in her life. A "cute" man whose eyes twinkled, a charming artist and wanna-be writer, an unstoppable talker, and a boat-mad individual who not only wanted to take a boat on the water, but actually wanted to live on that boat and raise his family there. She had not learned about boats while attending the prestigious Salem Academy, in Winston Salem, NC, for her last two years of high school. Nor had she learned about boats at Temple University, in Philadelphia, her choice of school for higher education. Actually, she knew nothing at all about Gerg, the water, or boats.
Time moved onward and she was not surprised that her engagement ring turned out to be a pop-top ring from a beer can and her additional engagement present turned out to be a 25-foot, antique, wooden sailboat; she was thrilled. She became intimately acquainted with a marine product called "BoatLIFE," used for caulking and sealing wooden boat hulls. She had to get used to the idea that without the BoatLIFE, the boat would sink; she was thrilled with this prospect, as well. Sealing 25 feet on each of two sides of the engagement present was an adventure she equated with a trip to the dentist.
As Gerg and Fizz scraped and painted, spending hours in the sun of a New Jersey shore early spring, Fizz watched several fiberglass boats speed by on their way down Toms River to enjoy Barnegat Bay, she asked Gerg, "Is this sailing?" The standing joke became one of their favorites. He never got around to answering her; but, 40 years and many boats later she almost has the answer figured out herself.
Many of Greg's books are available in two formats, one with and one without vibrant historical pictures. This version is the compressed version without any pictures or other illustrations, and is priced accordingly.
