The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel written by famous French author Alexandre Dumas. The story was completed in 1844 and it is one of the most his popular works all over the world along with The Three Musketeers. Like many of his works this was made from plot outline suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet.

The novel takes place in such countries as France and Italy, and also in islands in the Mediterranean during the historical events of 1815-1838. It begins just from before so called Hundred Days of Napoleon and goes through the reign of Lois-Philippe of France. The story is about the imprisoned man, who escapes from jail and is willing to get revenge on people who imprisoned him. An adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy and forgiveness and, in addition, involves romance, loyalty, betrayal and selfishness, shown throughout the story as characters slowly reveal their true inner nature.

The book is considered to be classic nowadays and includes historical setting as major element.
