Richard Nolan was a wastrel, a lonely boy of sixteen with no great incentive to work, and Watauga condemned him as a laggard and useless. How he went out on the Wilderness Road, into the Cherokee country, over to the French Trail; what he found and what he learned in perilous adventure, that is the story of a wayfaring lad.
