"Other Wise Men of Gotham" is a short story, entered in the collection of Fifty Famous Stories, published in 1896. The tale is about the peasants of Gotham, who once known, that the King is going to pass through the town, decide to feign imbecility – the King is a cruel, bad man, so if he would come to their town, the peasants should have to find food and lodging for him and his men; and if he would see anything that pleased him, he would be sure to take it for his own. So, when the royal messengers arrive, they see the rustics engaged in some absurd tasks...
