Robinson Crusoe is a well-known novel written by Daniel Defoe in 1719. It was published under very long title: "The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates."

The author wanted readers to think it was autobiography of a real person. In the fact it is fictional autobiography of a character named Robinson Crusoe (Robinson Kreutznaer was his birth name) – a castaway forced to spend years before being rescued on a remote tropical island somewhere near Trinidad, clashing with cannibals, captives and mutineers.

The story seems to be influenced by life of Alexander Selkrik, a Scottish castaway who spent 4 years on the island "Mas a Tierra" which was renamed to Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966. The book has become one of the most published books in history.
