Rift Magic, Dark Magic

In Alluvia, almost-seventeen-year-old Amy Ward envies her best friend, Belinda Donavan, an exceptionally talented witch. Amy longs for the magical abilities her parents and her brothers possess in abundance, having none of her own.

Belinda wishes she had the famous Ward name, any name but the cursed Donavans. Cursed since her ancestor nearly destroyed Alluvia a thousand years ago in the Blood War.

But everything changes on the night of the Turning-out Ball—where everyone in Cliffside High School demonstrates their control over their true magical selves and makes the sacred, blood-vow of obedience to the Council of Magic.

Not only do Amy and Belinda not make the vow, but they are sucked through a Rift into the Earth dimension, to San Francisco, where someone is murdering teenage girls. Only by using dark magic has anyone survived jumping through a Rift and slipped past the Rift Guardians to the other side. Amy wonders why she and Belinda survived? And if they find a Rift Guardian, will the Guardian help them get back to Alluvia or kill them for breaking the law and coming through a Rift?
