We felt it all the way down here in Texas. There was no shaking, no noise, just a sensation that the bottom had dropped out of the world, a release of tension that had been imperceptibly building all our lives. Within hours, we could see it: A pillar of smoke to the Northwest, a boiling column of vaporized rock which would soon bleach the color from our lives, which would snuff out the sun.
We knew it had happened before, we even knew its damn schedule. We knew it was overdue and we did nothing. Not that there was much anyone could have done.
After thirty years of devastating volcanic winter, a fragile civilization has been scraped from the ash. Industry and commerce have begun to flourish again among small city-states and settlements in the ruins of Texas. The hardened rangers of the Republic roam the wastelands to protect vital trade routes and isolated homesteads from savage bands of outlaws. Their swift and brutal justice has brought a delicate prosperity to the region, but a new menace has emerged. A barbaric warlord is gathering an army which threatens to cut the Republic’s vital fuel supply. The fledgling nation must assemble its forces and fight for its very existence.
