Seventeen year old Megan Conroy always thought the only places witches existed were in movies and fairy tales; she never expected to become one herself.
That’s exactly what happens one snowy day when she’s almost struck by a speeding car on the walk home from school. Blacking out after experiencing a strange rush of energy filling her, she wakes up in the hospital and is visited by Finn- the new boy in her class and the one who knocked her out of the car’s path. He tries to tell her that because of her accident she’s now different, but she becomes frightened and a worried nurse tells him to leave. That night she has an odd dream about a standing stone in a forested clearing carved with mysterious, rune-like symbols. Little does she know the impact this seemingly random dream is going to have on her life...
When she returns home she tries to go back to life as usual; worrying about how she's going to pass her dreaded math class and what country she's going to choose for her upcoming study abroad program. But all thoughts of normalcy are shattered when she looks out the window and sees a mysterious creature crossing the lawn- a creature that neither of her parents can see. She overhears them talking about her ‘crazy’ great grandmother Moira who would also see things that weren’t there, and it upsets her into retreating to her room.
While her parents are gone Finn shows up on her doorstep and tries to explain himself again. Frustrated with what she thinks is some kind of prank, she orders him to just spit out what he wants to tell her, and he does…by telling her that she’s a witch, just like him.
Refusing to believe such an outlandish claim, she makes him leave and goes on a walk to clear her head. But what starts out as a pleasant stroll soon turns into a terrifying encounter with a demon in the woods. Only when Finn comes to her rescue again is she finally willing to hear him out. Megan, he soon explains, is what his people the Witani call an awakened witch; a person born with witch blood whose previously dormant magic is activated through a physical or emotional trauma. Although still a little unsure as to whether she can believe everything he says, she's at least willing to let him tell her more of the story.
And the story he tells her will not only change her life forever, but will put her on a path that will both lead her to discover shocking secrets about her past and ultimately uncover the road to her future...
