Spiritism has always been a controversial topic, discussed and debated both by historians and researchers who have tried to analyse it and explain it. This book is an attempt to summarize the way in which the spiritist phenomenon began and the main channels through which it was spread. The main countries studied are: France, England and the United States. The most important personalities who have converted into spiritualists are taken into account, as well as the social, psychological and political implications that spiritism had for XIX-th century Europe. After analysing the spiritist phenomenon in the American and European outset, I will move on to the Romanian case, which has not been addressed before in a comprehensive history of spiritist phenomena. In the Romanian case I will discuss the main articles and newspapers that have addressed the issue of spiritism. This work will not try to explain the spiritist phenomenon per se, but rather present a historical perspective on the most important literature and the beginning of the spiritist phenomenon in Europe after 1850’s until the beginning of XX-th century.
