Nudism in New York became a contentious issue after a group of mixed sex nude bathers were found swimming and exercising in a Manhattan gymnasium in 1934. An anonymous tip was sent by a woman to the New York Police, giving law enforcement the address where her husband was spending the majority of his free time. A police detective accompanied by a policewoman expected to enter an establishment where gambling was in progress. Instead they came upon something quite different in its nature. A raid commenced and three of the gym's operators were arrested, including the director of The Olympian League of Nudists.
