I left this little town an angry young man. I was heading home, back to the big city. I had sold my motorcycle and used some of my beer profits to buy a car.
For me being just seventeen, it was a nice ride. I had made arrangements to stay with one of my Vegas school buddies.
My friend lived in a secured high rise apartment with his dad. His mom had died when he was seven so he and his dad were living the bachelor life already. They had a pool and a workout room. It was classy.
In the morning I would swim and then workout. There was a woman in her twenties who worked the front desk at the clubhouse. Her name was Mary and in a short time we became friends. She was from Mississippi, and talked in a sweet southern accent. She also was over leasing the apartments and could charm the socks of her clients.
I’d been staying at my friends for about a week when Mary mentioned she had a room for rent at her place. I told her I wasn’t working yet, but I had saved a little money. She told me her husband worked as a bellman down town and was tight with one of the hotel valet managers. I told her if she could get me a valet job I’d talk to my people who ran the bellman on the strip and see if they would put him on. “Set it up, I said, and I’ll rent your room.”
