Unexpected Oasis

I won't lie. I didn't take a contract job in Afghanistan because I wanted some grand adventure, or to experience another culture, or even for the money. I came to escape. I came hoping the desert air would make tears impossible, and the sand and dust might choke out the lingering memories of an ex-husband, his infidelity, and the twenty-four-year-old college student now living my life.
