Constance Harlee finds that life as a Riverbeast is very different from her life as a Boston blueblood. And she finds that her treatment at the hands of Bart Fink and his keelboat crew is awakening new feelings inside her, feelings she would not have guessed she was capable of feeling. They used her so surely, so knowingly, as if they knew her body better than she did. Which might well be the case, for her life as a Boston blueblood was highly repressed.
She cannot help but be taken by the stark contrast between her new life and her old one. Here some thoughts she had from “Awakening”:
“I did not have the slightest bit of guilt for pretending to feel faint when I did not, thus inspiring such attentions. I was a member of the smart set of Boston society and quite a beauty besides. It was only fitting that every consideration should be given to my feelings, even those I chose to misrepresent. I remembered this as I lay naked, bound and gagged while men laughed at me for responding sexually to the attentions of a brute.”
“I was pretty full by the time the meal ended. It was an excellent stew, very New Orleans, with all sorts of savory spices mixed in with the meat and vegetables. Though the taste of dirty fingers kept it from being the sort of thing you'd expect to find in a top-quality New Orlean restaurant. And of course, most restaurants didn't strip their guests naked and tie their wrists to their ankles. It's the little things like that that make the best places stand out, I guess.”
