This may not be a true story. It is a tale about a rather ordinary, privileged family on the brink of change during one eventful summer in 1649. It is one I enjoy telling, and I hope you will enjoy reading it.
The year it all started was 1637. The family was called Baric, and they lived in the Venetian colony of Croatia, on the Dalmatian coast.
They, along with their servants and soldiers and friends and lovers, dwelled behind ancient walls high above the fishing port the Barics had overseen for hundreds of years. They called their little town Solgrad; just an ordinary village that did not get much notice from the ruling capital. The current lord of this land, Baron Lorenc Baric, preferred it that way.
But this is not his story. This is his son’s story. Mostly.
"Shields Down" is the first book in "The House of Baric" trilogy. The saga begins with a drowning that changed the lives of everyone at the House of Baric. Mauro Baric is the first to feel the consequences of this tragic event.
