In the early days of Canada's north, times were very tough and the perils many. But many hardy men, and a few women, were attracted to the adventure. Women's jobs were few, mostly as a nurse, teacher, camp cook, or waitress; but many wives followed their husbands whose work ranged from RCMP, to miner, pilot, or small business man. Some had exceptionally unusual housing arrangements, or in a most remote place, in the earliest days, no bathroom plumbing, substantial challenges getting food and the loneliness was the most difficult part for many. But the women prevailed, did what they could for home and hearth and mostly helped each other, which in so many ways bonded a community that thrives today.
