It is not until the reader is some way on in the story that the idea of the Night Witch is introduced and even then, that person's identity remains a mystery until the very end. David Dale's cleverly drawn mystery Night Witch is full of suspense and intrigue, set against a backdrop of communist China and a corrupt police force. Night Witch revolves around two central characters, the western Jason Lamont who is in China teaching English and the Chinese Jin-Mei, and the drama begins around their romantic entanglement. However, it quickly moves on, drawing in other characters and become a backdrop for a compelling tale of murder mystery.
Night Witch is a commentary on the political and cultural situation in China that arose after the Tiananmen Square massacre but the author does not use the book as a platform to lecture or comment. Instead he weaves a clever tale of human weakness and tension with excellent characterisation, a gripping drama which will keep the reader turning the pages avidly until the very end.
