Forensic psychologist and perpetual loner Dr. Bentley Gamble is murdered, and becomes a ghost. To move on to the next realm, he must find out who killed him. A series of campus sex crimes may have something to do with who gets bumped off. The sex crimes also lead to blackmail and various permutations of insanity and mayhem. Small wonder everyone calls the college Elmer Butthead.
The ghost detective gets it all sorted out, but not before he has ghost sex and pulls his fair share of pranks to get even. Ghosthood messes with his DNA, and he finds it increasingly difficult to act human when instead he can be haunting people and taking possession of their souls. He is as misunderstood in death as he was in life.
The novel’s dark humor and satire of eggheads are used to make a very real point about the problem of sex crimes on campuses across the nation.
