The car ride was torturously short, no traffic thanks to the thunder and lightning that flashed across the sky, and Chelle hit every damn light between the pancake house and mine. More than anything, I wanted to continue this conversation, to stay close to her.

When she pulled into my driveway and let the car idle, I lingered, trying to build up the courage to tell her I wanted her.

“Are you working tomorrow?” I asked lamely, figuring it was better to ask anything than to sit there dumbly while she was probably waiting for me to get out of her car.

Then startlingly, instead of answering my question, she put the car in park and turned to face me. “Can I kiss you now, or do I have to make you a pancake first?”

I thought my heart would stop beating right then and there, and even more surprisingly, I found myself leaning over the center console and running my fingers through her wet hair as our lips met.

It sent tingly warmth coursing through my whole body as the sensation of her mouth against mine, her tongue flicking across my lips, the wetness of her skin, the faint smell of wet lavender that permeated the rain, and the rumble of thunder beyond the boundaries of the car all mixed together and made me dizzy in a good way. She plied my mouth open with her tongue and I answered with my own.
