A Venezuelan Airlines Super Constellation filled with students returning from their studies in the United States crashed after midnight in June 1956. Out of U.S. territorial waters, the airliner plunged into the Atlantic Ocean approximately 32 miles from Asbury Park. All 64 persons on board were killed. A Coast Guard pilot watched the tragedy as it unfolded, beginning when the Venezuelan pilot tried to dump his fuel. For a never explained reason the airliner caught fire and plummeted on fire into the ocean below it.
