Rolson McKane is one flawed former cop. He's spent the last few weeks recovering from the fact that he got kicked off the Lumber Junction Police Department for slamming into a woman's car.

So, when he finds a dead body near his property, he doesn't feel up to the task of solving this particular murder. He wants to leave it to the LJPD. It seems like racism may be involved, and he's just a guy who can't seem to slow down his drinking.

However, when he sees how little the police seem to care about Emmitt Laveau's death, he takes it upon himself to find the killer for this particular case of homicide. The guy who owns the property where the body was found, Leland Brickmeyer, seems like he wants to push this whole thing to the back burner.

Oh, and there's Emmitt, who visits Rolson on a nightly basis to frighten him into helping with the investigation. Rolson's always had a weird feeling around graveyards, and now it seems like maybe he can talk with the dead, which would certainly explain the bad dreams.

Rolson's afraid that if he can't solve the murder, no one will. Even more than that, he thinks maybe if he doesn't figure out who killed Emmitt Laveau, his own past will get dragged back to the surface, and he hasn't been forced to confront his childhood since, well, he was a child.
