The Grasshopper's Song: a retelling of the Aesop Fable, "The Ant and the Grasshopper"

I’ve always been annoyed by the one-sidedness of the Aesop fable, “The Ant and the Grasshopper.” The basic premise — that the Grasshopper is a fool because he is not preparing for the winter — always struck me as unfair. His devotion to art is portrayed as trivial and wrongheaded. This story is my attempt to show the role art plays in the Ant’s survival, and the transformation it has on her (even if she is loathe to admit it).

This story gives us two passionate characters in a scary world, fighting their own fears to do what they each feel they must.
