Two highly publicized sports scandals developed in New York City in the years 1945-1946. Occurring almost two years apart one of the incidents involved pro sports and the other was amateur related. At Brooklyn College five prominent players were offered money to throw a game against Akron University in late January 1945. Near the end of 1946 two star players on the New York Giants football team were approached by gamblers. One of the bookmakers was also a part of the Brooklyn College fiasco. One of the Giants players needed money badly and was amenable to throwing the 1946 NFL Championship Game at the Polo Grounds.
