Like many women, Elsa and Ginny cannot deny the problem they have gotten into. Like many problems, that problem is one that has troubled women throughout the centuries. Yes, women since the earliest of times have dealt with unplanned pregnancy. And there has always been the same decision to make, sometimes in conjunction with a loved or not so loved partner, and sometimes alone.
Elsa and Ginny live in different centuries. What was accepted socially regarding abortion in the times in which they lived? What was unique in those times that led them to their predicaments in the first place?
Look at life in the latter half of the 19th century where not only slavery was hotly debated but rights of women were coming forcibly to the forefront. Read what laws were in force regarding abortion and how the newspapers dealt with the issue. Find out how the new belief of Spiritism influenced thinking and infiltrated Victorian beliefs. Then step into the 21st century and you’ll see a family dealing with the problem, each viewing from their own personal perspective the effects of what is chosen, life or abortion, on a young girl’s future.
The choices will be made because they always must. Will they choose life or death? What will their choices bring them? Will they live happily ever after? Whichever choice they make, “happily ever after” is rare to fairy tales only, right? What will the consequences of their decisions be?
Take this journey with Elsa and Ginny to experience their lives; the history of their families, their interaction with their friends and peers, what was religiously believed and what was socially accepted, and finally what, if any, consequences flowed from their difficult decisions.
