In the second installment of the American Journeys saga, the Kaplan family, a trapper and a native American struggle to survive in the Pacific Northwest as their cultures clash and each struggles to adapt to a changing world. Doctor Beckham and his wife follow the Oregon Trail to Portland enduring extreme heat, cold and natural disasters. Old customs are cast aside by the younger generation causing friction with their elders. All must endure the transition from an agrarian society to the beginnings of an industrial society; with all its accompanying injustice and downright cruelty in the form of child labor and unsafe working conditions.
