Dr. Gottman has over 40 years experience as a psychologist and relationship expert, and he believes that he now knows what makes marriage tough at times and also what can prevent a marriage from going bad. Gottman found that most marriage therapy was failing because of its focus on better communication, validation and active listening. His observation of happily married couples had more to do with what he called their “emotional intelligence” – their ability to understand, honor, and respect each other and their marriage, enabling them to build a purpose into their lives together, as opposed to couples who give up on each other too soon.
