This comedy is set in the picturesque village of Altwich, nestling as it did, in the bottom of the hills of the Cocsicx.
The bulging Cocsicx spawned the clear waters of the River Twich, the name of which, combined with the ancient Celtic word for ‘large floating sheep’ (Auwll), gave the village its name: Auwll and Twich, or as we now know it, Altwich.
The village had its beautiful setting and lightly throbbing industrial plant, it was true. However, Altwich also had a rich and colourful historical past and perhaps the most famous of these events was the visit of no less a person than Henry VIII himself.
During the early part of the fifteen-hundreds, Henry had a stopover at one of the local inns. Apparently, there was some shenanigans involving a few of the maidens of the village and a somewhat over active pot-bellied pig. There was also an unsubstantiated report that a large sheep was in the thick of it.
Hence the saying: “Auwll’s well that endeth, this endeth as well.”
Strangely, and some would say auspiciously (but they were only those who knew what auspiciously meant) not something Anne Boleyn was heard to say a lot.
