Preface explains the purpose of the essay. Chapter 1 describes the part played by Vermont, Maine and W. Virginia in the War of Independence. We explain why and how the 3 states came to exist. Chapter 2 gives reasons for 16 stripes. We note that 13 is a spooky number. Some think it jinxed. We have conspiracy theories that divide the nation. We discuss why 16 is a better number in terms of political expediency, mystically and theologically. Chapter 3 notes that 50 stripes is too busy or cluttered a flag, and that the other states were not a part of the original colonies or play much or any part in the war for independence.
