Growing up on the streets of North Philadelphia has made 14-year-old Roxi Reynolds hard. She's seen it all— a cousin gunned down in a public pool— an opiate addicted father living under an abandoned bridge— a girlfriend raped and left for dead in a dumpster.
The high school freshman has been accepted to a prestigious charter school, but she is more concerned with surviving the cruel urban streets of Brotherly Love than getting an education.
What's the point? Who gives a damn? Roxi knows that she is more likely to end up a murder statistic than a high school graduate.
She believes that her life is over before it has truly begun. That is, until she's approached on her fourteenth birthday by Mr. Burton, the high school boxing instructor.
When he looks at Roxi, he sees hope. He sees a future. Mr. Burton challenges her to put on a pair of boxing gloves and fight for the future she so truly deserves. Life is tough, but so is she.
