When the Reverend Sally is asked by the bishop to become the resident vicar at St Catherine's mother and baby home, she resists at first, arranging only to visit. However, she soon finds herself agreeing to move in, practising her skills as a midwife as well as offering spiritual help and guidance to the girls and staff alike.
The enigmatic Sister Atkins, quiet Maisie and lively Jenny work together to make a home for the young mothers-to-be: abandoned, raped or just unlucky. Sally settles in with them all, but something sinister is happening. Murder and mayhem take place as past events come home to roost and the girls' friendships and strengths come to the fore.
