Being the last of something is very important. Since Cuthbert was the very last Dodo bird in the world it meant that when he died the Dodo bird would became extinct.

Extinction is explained this way: It means something is gone forever because you need at least one boy animal and one girl animal to make more of the same animal.

While they were still on the island, Captain Biscuitbeard's favorite pigeon Tallulah and Cuthbert the Dodo bird, fell in love.

So, when they got back to England, the captain built the love birds a special pen so they could start a family. Soon, the couple had two dozen pidgey-doos running around Captain Biscuitbeard's farm.
