Fight or Die in Vietnam

I could hear gunfire on the other side of the compound. My hand was sweating and shaking a little. I don’t know if I can do this. The sergeant showed up, “Ok. Zappers at the wire. They will be testing our strength so stay alert. Remember, pick your target and don’t go crazy.” Shortly, a couple of VC’s tried to blow a hole in the wire, but before I could shoot, the 50 cal machine gun opened up and took care of that. We relaxed a little. I have been on lots of patrols but nothing like this. The hardest part is just sitting here and waiting; nerve-wracking! I knew the hard part was yet to come. I hate that creepy feeling that something was going to go wrong.
