On a frozen satellite of Inversion 6, an android, Nina, the last of nine, is created. Alex1, its maker, has been stranded on that sphere for almost two hundred years while, throughout the Inversion system, war has raged between the evil and all-powerful Executive and the vastly outnumbered Resistance. Continually improving and adapting themselves, the nine wait for a chance to escape and join the Resistance's fight for freedom.

A ship arrives carrying two Changers, humans with a mutation that allows them to alter their physical appearance. They tell the assembled androids that the war is over; the Resistance are defeated. All but two of the androids accept this news with resignation; the two, Nina and Fiver, set off in the Changers' ship in a brave but unlikely attempt to fulfil their destiny.

This fifth book in the series tells the intertwined stories of two remarkable women, Nina and May, and documents their most intimate thoughts and actions as they each seek to make their mark on this most inhospitable of systems.
