This is fourth of six books in the Ragged Dick series Alger wrote about the life of struggling boys in New York City, a place that had to be pretty scary at the end of the 19th century. "Newsboys," those boys who sold newspapers one at a time on the streets, and "boot blacks," those who would offer to shine the shoes of those men they considered wealthy and concerned enough about how they looked.
The story opens with Rufus, who has twice stolen his young and vulnerable sister, Rose, from a mean step-father, starting a new job on Wall Street, having been fortunate to have found $300, which had never been claimed.
In short, another great book sure to keep readers turning pages.
This edition of the book contains the four, original, rejuvenated illustrations, and an additional six time- and place relevant, and unique to this edition.
