Kate's life had settled quietly since her best friend took off after the collapse of her illicit business. Life has just started to become a little more enjoyable now that she wasn't torn between the loyalty to her friend and the guilt of silently standing by watching her friend's criminal activity, and is more than happy to leave that world behind her and keep things more simple.
Until the day Sasha shows up. The two immediately click and Sasha quickly fills the empty space that was left behind from the loss of her previous friend.
Life is simple, until Sasha's husband, Renbrow starts becoming jealous in the most peculiar way. Kate starts to suspect that Sasha is being held hostage in a life commandeered by an angry jealous man who refuses to let her have any activities outside of the four walls of their American dream home.
When she makes plans to have a craft table at the local farmers market next to her new friends, he guilts her with his conservative cult like version of religion telling her that her frivolous hobbies aren't worthy of her duties as a pious faithful church wife.
Soon, things become even darker when Sasha reveals some of his activities outside the house. Sasha has forgiven him for cruel physical abuse and co mingling with prostitutes.
Kate isn't keen on letting her friend suffer any longer. When Renbrow becomes suspicious that his wholesome persona doesn't hold up, Kate goes from a welcome guest to a persona non grata. Renbrow disapproves of Kate's free and happy single life and constantly compares it to witchery, and he doesn't want his wife getting any ideas. Kate tries to distance herself from his strange behavior and perverted religious fervor. When his abusive control issues start spiraling downward Sasha finds herself in flight to frantically protect herself and her children.
Renbrow's anger grows as he sends messages with intentions of violence and punishment. Sasha's only defense is a restraining order against her husband and his violent outbursts. When the legal system isn't enough to keep him at bay the girls discover how to shut him down by using the fear of his silly superstitions against him. When Sasha brazenly uses a magical ritual to demonstrate that she is no longer a victim to his powerful will, she might have just gone too far and accidentally shut him down for good
This book can be read as a stand alone in the three part Kate Castle series, however, starting at the first book may be more enjoyable.
