A teenage girl in 1885 in Mojave, CA, upon graduating from eighth grade, is not allowed, by her father, to go on to high school. She is kept at home to work in the family diner. She considers that one possible path to freedom from her controlling father is to sneak aboard a borax wagon headed for Death Valley.
