The Complete Planetary Series: A Martian Odyssey and Others by Stanley G. Weinbaum

THE COMPLETE PLANETARY SERIES includes influential science fiction writer Stanley G. Weinbaum's ten stories set on worlds of Earth's solar system following several centuries of human exploration and settlement. Written in the 1930s, the planetary stories were consistent with scientific understanding of the solar system at that time, as well as consistent with science fiction ideas of the planets, most notably a warm and wet jungle-like Venus. In the first story of the series, A MARTIAN ODYSSEY, Weinbaum created a sympathetic alien character, one who was able to think and reason in a decidedly non-human way. Prior to A MARTIAN ODYSSEY, extraterrestrial characters tended to be two-dimensional plot devices or evil villains, not sympathetic characters in their own right. A MARTIAN ODYSSEY was voted the second best science fiction short story in 1970, coming in behind Isaac Asimov's NIGHTFALL.
